Is your electrical panel safe? 6 warning signs in an Algarve home

Multimeter testing an electronic circuit board

Many Algarve homes have electrical installations that are decades old. Learn the signs that your panel needs attention before it becomes a problem.

Why this matters

Electrical wiring is one of those things we only notice when it fails. But in a region like the Algarve, where many homes were built or renovated decades ago, and where air conditioning, induction hobs and electric-car chargers have pushed up the load, it is worth knowing how to spot when something is off.

None of these signs, on its own, necessarily means danger. But any one of them deserves a professional's attention.

1. The breakers trip often

A breaker tripping is doing its job: protecting you. But if it trips repeatedly, it is a sign that a circuit is overloaded or that there is a fault. Flipping it back on without investigating only delays the problem.

2. Sockets or switches that are hot or discoloured

A socket that is warm to the touch, shows dark marks or smells of burning is a clear sign to switch it off and call an electrician. It usually points to loose connections or overheating, two common causes of electrical fires.

3. Lights that flicker or dim

Lights that flicker when you switch on an appliance can indicate circuits working at their limit or poor connections. If it happens in several rooms, the problem may be in the panel.

4. No RCD (or one you've never tested)

The RCD is the device that protects you from electric shock: it cuts the power in a fraction of a second if there is a leakage. Older installations may not have one, or may have one that has never been tested. It is one of the most important safety elements in a home.

5. An old panel with screw-in fuses

If you still have old screw-in fuses instead of modern breakers, your installation is probably from another era and was unlikely to be designed for the load a home carries today. Upgrading the panel is one of the best value-for-money safety investments there is.

6. A burning smell with no visible source

A smell of burning plastic you can't trace should be taken seriously. Switch off what you can and ask for an inspection. Better a false alarm than ignoring a real warning.

What to do next

If you recognise one or more of these signs, the right move is to ask for an assessment, without any panic. We carry out fault finding, panel upgrades and safe electrical installations in Lagoa and the surrounding area. A simple inspection gives you peace of mind and, often, avoids bigger costs down the line.
